Meet Tristan, hake fisherman, Newlyn
Tristan Trennery works in the family business as the skipper of the Silver Dawn, in Newlyn, Cornwall.
He is no stranger to the sacrifices that many fishermen have to make in order to do their job. He can spend a week at a time out at sea - meaning that family dinners and family moments are missed. Tristan does say, however, it’s not always that way. A week out to sea is often followed by a week back at home, meaning he can do the breakfasts, the school runs, and the bedtime stories.
Those shifts out at sea are no easy feat - he has to battle and negotiate the elements, to keep his crew safe. As skipper, he is ultimately the one responsible for those on his fishing vessel.
Sustainability
Alongside the safety of the crew, Tristan is also focused on seafood sustainability. As an MSC certified fishery, his vessel and the other boats in the fleet have to make sure enough hake are left in the seas for the population to be healthy. They also ensure the surrounding marine habitats are not unnecessarily damaged and that the fishery is well-managed.
This helps to protect and keep the oceans full of life for future generations.
