The MSC UK Awards celebrate the outstanding achievements and performance in the area in sustainable fish and seafood across the entire UK business spectrum. A diverse group of partners and stakeholders from across the UK seafood supply chain virtually attended our September 2020 streamed awards ceremony at the National Marine Aquarium, Plymouth, from the largest retailers to fish suppliers to fishermen themselves.

A circular economy for old, plastic fishing gear
This year, we decided to create something special for our Awards that embraces sustainability and the circular economy movement, with a strong local connection. These 3D printed awards are made from old fishing gear sourced from the MSC certified sustainable Cornish hake fishery, then recycled and repurposed by Fishy Filaments, another Cornish company, and converted into a unique award.
The raw material
The plastic was sourced from the recycled nylon of fishing nets used by Cornish fishermen, which then went through a process to convert it into fishy filament. Fishy filaments are made from nylon recovered from monofilament gillnets used in the MSC certified Cornish hake fishery.
Sustainable sourcing
- No other pigments or modifiers are added in the process of repurposing the netting.
- Each award is made from entirely recycled materials.
- From sourcing the netting to printing and crafting the awards, the whole process is rooted in Cornwall.
- Inspired by its natural movements, each award pays tribute to the oceans that sustain us.
- Each award allows light to pass in jade tones, much like the water.
- A continuous spiral of fish reflects our united goal of sustaining thriving oceans.
Fishy Filaments' innovative harbour-side recycling technology was invented in Cornwall.
