The MSC exists to end overfishing. We want oceans to be healthy and thriving so future generations can enjoy seafood. Our ecolabel and certification program rewards sustainable fishing to help end overfishing. Learn more about fishing challenges in our ocean.
What is Overfishing?
Overfishing occurs when too many fish in a particular stock are caught and there are not enough adults to breed and sustain a healthy population.
Illegal, Unreported, Unregulated (IUU), and Destructive Fishing
IUU fishing is fishing that takes place outside of the regulations set by governments and fishing management bodies. IUU and destructive fishing contribute to overfishing.
Preventing Lost Gear and Ghost fishing
Ghost gear is fishing gear that has been abandoned, lost, or discarded in the ocean. The MSC aims to reduce ghost fishing by recognizing fisheries that avoid gear loss and minimize waste.
