Yesterday Findus became the first Swedish processor to demonstrate their commitment to sustainable fishing by launching a hoki fish product certified to the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) environmental standard. The MSC rewards well managed fisheries with a fish tick eco-label which reassures consumers that the fish comes from a sustainable fishery.
The alarming environmental problem of overfishing prompted Findus to introduce a new fisheries sourcing policy. Findus hopes this policy will assist consumers in making the best environmental choice in seafood. Findus intends to offer a hoki alternative to all their current cod dishes.
What the MSC says
Brendan May, Chief Executive at the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), commented:
"The MSC is delighted that Findus has launched a hoki product in Sweden this week. We welcome the public commitment that Findus is making towards long-term sustainability. Consumers concerned about overfishing and its environmental and social consequences are increasingly able to make informed decisions about the seafood products they buy thanks to leading retailers and processors, such as Findus, who are setting excellent examples."
Findus is planning a campaign in the Autumn which will inform Swedish consumers about the significance of the MSC standard and hopes to encourage more fisheries to come forward for certification through their support.
