The sustainable fishing world comes with a lot of vocabulary that most of us probably don’t use in our everyday lives. So, we’ve created a series of definitions to help you become a sustainable fishing expert.

Tldr:

At its core, sustainable means “able to be maintained at a certain rate or level.” When applied to fishing, this means that fishing ought to be able to continue indefinitely without depleting the target population.

The details:

The definition of sustainable in the MSC program means leaving enough fish in the ocean to replenish the targeted population; fishing in a way that respects other species and marine habitats; and managing the fishery in a way that can adapt to changing environmental circumstances and ensure people who depend on fishing can maintain their livelihoods.
