The sustainable fishing world comes with a lot of vocabulary that most of us probably don’t use in our everyday lives. So, we’ve created a series of definitions to help you become a sustainable fishing expert.

Tldr:

In fisheries management, a fish stock describes a particular subset of a population of fish or shellfish that is targeted by a fishery.

The details:

According to the UN FAO, a fish stock describes “the living resources in the community or population from which catches are taken in a fishery.”

Biologically, a stock is a group of fish or shellfish of the same species that live in the same area and interbreed.

Identifying fish stocks is critical to effective and sustainable fisheries management because decision-makers and fishers need to know how healthy and abundant a particular group of fish is before they can determine how many can be harvested.
