Schools across Cardiff have gone in hook, line and sinker for sustainable fish and have been showing off their eco-credentials with a sustainable seafood celebration. On 30th March, 14,000 pupils in 103 schools throughout Cardiff tucked into sustainable fish fingers for their school dinners making it a full-scale fishy Friday.
As part of the Marine Stewardship Council's Fish and Kids programme, Cardiff schools have made the commitment to serve fish sourced from MSC certified sustainable fisheries. Along with sustainable seafood in the canteen, kids in the classroom learn about the fish on their plate, the underwater world it inhabits and the amazing journey that it takes to get from sea to school.
Long time supporters
Sue Eakers, Cardiff Schools Wellbeing and Compliance Manager said: "Schools across Cardiff are proud to work with the MSC on such an important environmental issue. We've supported the campaign for a long time as it not only gives us the chance to put sustainable sourced fish on our menus but teach our pupils about it too."
Cardiff Council is one of the first two councils in Wales to join Fish and Kids and support sustainable fisheries across the world. Ruth Westcott, UK Commercial Officer at the MSC hopes that there will be many more to come: "In 2003, Cardiff schools were the first in Wales to make the commitment to sustainable seafood in their school meals and it's brilliant to see that they’re still celebrating the fact 9 years later. It would be great if more schools across Wales would follow their lead so we can have a sustainable seafood celebration across the whole country."
