Marine Stewardship Council representatives and other industry leaders from across the world are set to descend on Qingdao to host a Future Forum discussion on seafood, as part of the China National Seafood Expo taking place from October 30th – November 1st.
The Forum will focus on challenges and opportunities for the future of sustainable seafood and consist of speeches and expert panel discussions led by MSC representatives from regions including Europe, Australia and Asia, as well as delegates from the Norwegian Seafood Council and the Canadian Embassy in China.
The event follows recent consumer data which showed 62% of people in China have changed their diet in the past two years to have less of an impact on the environment. Yet despite seafood being one of the most sustainable proteins available, the same data showed most people surveyed in China are eating less than one portion of fish a week.
With 40,000 seafood industry professionals expected in Qingdao for the Expo, the Forum will offer an opportunity to explore how issues such as climate change, geopolitical conflict, cost of living, health concerns and an ageing population are influencing how seafood is sourced and consumed.
Talks will look at how these global issues are playing out in the Chinese market and what they mean for the future of sustainable seafood across the country.
Cui He, President of China Aquatic Products Processing and Marketing Alliance said: “We are delighted to collaborate with the MSC once again to support the upcoming Fish for Future Forum at the China Seafood Expo in Qingdao.
“Our past collaborations have yielded significant results in advancing sustainable fisheries in China. This forum will further strengthen our partnership, focusing on enhancing sustainability and transparency across the seafood supply chain. We believe that through continued collaboration and innovation, the sustainable seafood program in China will further grow, contributing to the long-term development of fisheries and the protection of marine ecosystems worldwide.”
Patrick Caleo, Regional Director of MSC Asia Pacific said: “We are delighted to be part of the China Seafood Expo, to foster collaboration and promote sustainable fisheries.
“MSC will be hosting a Fish for Future Forum where global and regional experts will share insights on the future of sustainable seafood. At the MSC booth, we look forward to meaningful discussions with partners and industry leaders, strengthening our joint commitment to transforming the seafood industry through responsible practices.”
